Personal Statement

Through my own educational experience, I have come to understand that teachers have an enormous impact on young people. Teachers provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in life. My greatest ambition as a lecturer is to serve as a positive role model and help students develop open minds, critical-thinking skills, and the confidence to contribute positively to society.

My volunteer work with the Foundation English Program at the American University of Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus, which began in September 2012, has provided me with valuable experience in classroom-based teaching. I assisted lower-ability pupils by preparing classrooms for activities, supporting reading, and helping younger students. Through this experience, I learned the importance of differentiation in lesson planning and how to implement it effectively.

I developed excellent time-management skills during my time at university, particularly because I worked to supplement my income. I was elected to serve as the Head of the Scientific Affairs Committee, where I was involved in organizing academic activities and events. This role appealed to me because I believe that effective coordination of events and projects, as well as the appropriate delegation of responsibilities, is important.

My experience as an English learner inspired me to become a lecturer, particularly because of my own school experiences. My English teacher treated me as an individual and encouraged me to improve continuously, which made me feel valued. I was motivated to work hard by my teacher’s enthusiasm and dedication. To make English lessons engaging, my tutor used a variety of teaching techniques and a good sense of humor. The classroom became more enjoyable because of his friendly and honest approach.

Between January and April 2015, I worked as a classroom assistant, supporting a mixed Year 3 and Year 4 class. I assisted colleagues with lesson planning and classroom activities and supported students with different learning needs. Through this experience, I discovered that different teaching approaches are needed to meet the needs of students with varying abilities.

Through my undergraduate degree in English Language Teaching, I gained a broad understanding of language, learning, and educational development. I believe that teachers should possess the ability to think quickly while remaining sensitive, patient, motivated, and enthusiastic. These are valuable qualities that I hope to develop and share with others.

My desire to teach young people motivates me to pursue a career in education. I understand that a teacher’s responsibilities extend beyond the school day, and I am committed to fulfilling these responsibilities. After working as a teaching assistant, I understand that teaching presents significant and sometimes exhausting challenges, but its rewards far outweigh its difficulties.
